The Girls' Swimming and Diving program, as a Varsity sport at the Academy, expects athletes and coaches alike to operate under the following considerations. As with any organized activity, no set of expectations is exhaustive. Any questions may be directed to the Coaching Staff, which is the arbiter of these and other program policies.

All members of the Girls' Swimming and Diving program will:

  1. Stay clean: It is essential that participants understand and abide by our No-Tolerance policy regarding substance abuse. If a participant is found to be in the possession or use of controlled substances, tobacco, or alcohol in violation of IMSA student conduct and residential policies, the participant will be dismissed from the team, and will forfeit eligibility for all end-of-season awards.
  2. Show up: Showing up involves attending all assigned practices. Practices are not optional. Practice expectations are outlined on the practice schedule. The practice schedule is subject to change during the course of the season to accommodate the training program. Showing up also involves attending all meets. Meets are not optional. With a program of this size, all swimmers are expected to contribute on either the Varsity or JV level at each regular-season and end-of-season meet unless informed otherwise by the Coaching Staff. The only acceptable excuses for missing meets are illness or family emergency, pending contact with the Coaching Staff. See part 4 below for more details.
  3. Work hard: Training and competition involve more than just showing up. Both swimming and diving require a consistent commitment, attention to detail, and good old-fashioned hard work. All swimmers and divers are expected to give their full attention and effort to practices and meets alike. The program is designed to complement the academic experience at the Academy, and as such, provides participants numerous opportunities to both learn and develop their skills while having fun in the process. The Coaching Staff is committed to helping athletes to improve mechanics, to develop better training and competitive habits, and to interact as part of a team. Athletes are likewise expected to make a commitment to these same goals.
  4. COMMUNICATE: Communication between athletes and coaches is both essential and required. If an athlete has a problem, or cannot make a scheduled team activity, it is solely the athlete's responsibility to make direct contact with a member of the Coaching Staff ahead of time, either in person, by phone, or via email. Do not expect anyone else to relay messages to the staff. Although the members of the Coaching Staff may hold other positions at the Academy, they are not always provided with information about individual students. Furthermore, swimmers and divers are encouraged to consult with the Coaching Staff if they have any academic or personal concerns, as they can direct students to Academy and other resources that may be of help.

Individual and team adherence to these policies is considered when evaluating athletes for awards and end-of-season competition.
