Purpose of the Lesson

Welcome to your first interactive German lesson. In this lesson you will learn two things. You will develop an understanding of the structure of the lessons you will encounter during the semester. You will also be interactively engaged in a learning activity in which you will learn some basic vocabulary and grammar so that you can read, write and talk about a young German.

Pre-Reading Activity

Read through and study the information in the following table before you read the text that follows. The information contained in the table will help you to understand the text. The symbol ß has the sound of ss.

Three of the four verbs in the table are regular. That means they follow a systematic pattern. The only verb that is irregular is sein.  Check the the pattern for the verb wohnen in the next table.

Cultural Overview

München is Germany's third largest city. It is the capital of the state of Bavaria. You may know it by its English name, Munich. Erding is a small city about 25 kilometers from München.

Now it is time to get to know Tony and his family.

  Hallo! Ich heiße Tony. Tony Schmidt. Ich bin 16 Jahre alt und wohne mit meiner Familie in Erding. Erding ist in Süddeutschland nicht weit von München. Meine Mutter heißt Sabine und sie ist 38 Jahre alt. Mein Vater heißt Anton und er ist 40 Jahre alt. Meine ältere Schwester heißt Anna. Sie ist 40 jahre alt und geht zur Universität in München. Mein jüngerer Bruder heißt Max. Er ist 12. Ich und meinen Bruder gehen zur Schule in Erding. Er ist in der 7. Klasse und ich bin in der 10. Klasse. Wir wohnen in einem Haus in der Schiller Straße. Unsere Adresse ist Schiller Straße 7
