Chicago and the Civil Rights Movement - the summer of 1966
The Chicago Open Housing Movement -  August, 1966

     In an effort to bring the Civil Rights movement into the North Dr. King visited a number of northern urban centers in 1965.  His visit to Chicago in was a major triumph.  The warm reception, and large crowds that he drew convinced him that Chicago might be the right place to begin his campaign. What follows are a series of  assessments by different commentators, at different times, of the effectiveness of that campaign:
