Extra-CurricularsThe Mathematics Team at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy supports a wide variety of extra-curricular activities for IMSA students. Participation in these programs can greatly enhance a student's IMSA experience. Activities range from fun lock-ins to serious mathematics competition. Check out the links below: Mathematics Honor SocietyMu Alpha Theta is the national honor society for high school mathematics. The IMSA chapter is very active. Check out their home page.Contests and CompetitionsJunior High Math Competition is an IMSA-sponsored event for junior high students from around Illinois. The Math Team is IMSA's interscholastic mathematics competition team. This team trains for and competes in the North Suburban (Chicago) Math League and the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics (ICTM) State Math Contest. IMSASMI is IMSA's own intramural math contest. Sponsored by the IMSA chapter of Mu Alpha Theta, this contest lets IMSA students have fun while doing math. Click to find out more. AMC/AIME/AMO is a sequence of increasingly challenging math exams. All IMSA students take the American Mathematics Competitions, and many do well enough to take the American Invitational Math Exam. A few talented students continue on to the Americam Mathematics Olympiad tryouts, with hopes of qualifying for the International Mathematics Olympiad team. These events and exams are sponsored by the Mathematical Association of America. ARML is a nationwide mathematics contest where different regions of the U.S. and Canada form teams from their best mathematics students. IMSA students often compete for the Chicago area team. Mandelbrot Competition is a high level mathematics competition for high school students. Many of our students compete both as individuals and as part of the IMSA team.
