A Photographic Salute to the

United States Air Force Academy

Published in 1996 by the United States Air Force Academy Association of Graduates, SPIRIT AND FLIGHT presents an extensive collection of photographic work on the Academy by Elizabeth Gill Lui. Created by the artist over the last decade, the imagery presented in the book focuses on the architectural, natural and cultural environment of the Academy. Designed and edited by the artist, the book incorporates as text excerpts from presidential commencement speeches delivered at the Academy by U.S. Presidents from John F. Kennedy forward, as well as reminiscences on the design and building of the Academy by internationally-known architect Walter A. Netsch.

The Academy Chapel, designed by Netsch in the 1950's while a young architect in the Chicago firm of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, was the honored recipient of the 1996 Twenty-Five Year American Institute of Architects Award. This prestigious award is bestowed on an architectural work that, having been in existence for a quarter of a century, is recognized as having enduring architectural and historical significance. The aesthetic and engineering uniqueness of this magnificent American monument is considered one the landmark works of twentieth-century modernism.
